Welcome to Starmap

disclaimer
I've put in data that looks right. But cannot guarantee the accuracy of any of the data used. The main purpose was to demonstrate the maths, php and gd used together.

Starmap is a PHP program that produces a PNG image of the night sky from any location, viewing in any direction, over a date range from 1000AD to 9999AD. The actual position data used is only approximate but seems to fit the present situation. The 25772 year precession cycle of the earth is also demonstrated. However the projected positions centuries ago or in the future will be less accurate. The sun, moon and planets are displayed in approximately the correct locations for the century 2000 to 2100.

Enter your location, viewing direction and time (GMT)

Either select the nearest city from the list below. If you wish to use latitude and longitude you must select None here (a valid city takes preference over a user defined location).
Or enter the longitude and latitude directly (user defined location). Or update the longitude and latitude by clicking on the map.

If you alter the view direction, date or time parameters before clicking on the map to update your position, the information will only be preserved on returning to this form if cookies and javascript are allowed on your browser.

Select "View Starmap" to view the png image of the stars and solar system objects visible from the position, time and view direction set.
